a poem on immigration

An Immigration Poem: I Wish You Knew

I am so grateful about my life and my past as it made me the person that I am today but this is what I wrote a couple of years ago to express how I felt about my life as an immigrant:

I wish you knew how it felt
To have to leave your country
Missing grandmother’s hugs
And Grandpa's wrinkled hands
I wish you knew how it felt

I wish you knew how it felt
To have to fear your life
Up all night wondering why
The tears on your mothers face
Following you day and night

I don't wish you would see war
Hiding behind a thin wall
Seeing terror on people's faces
Sirens and smoke in one
The neighbors house is now gone

I wish you knew how it felt
To leave everything behind
Kissing goodbye your loved ones
Return not at all in sight
Tonight my heart is just sad

I wish you knew how it felt
To look for a new home
Not fitting in anywhere
Nightmares of a past life
Following you everywhere
